Zinelandia: Cover Art from the Factsheet Five Era (1982-1998), traces the development of zine cover illustration through a transformative period when self-publishing flourished under the influence of the review publication, Factsheet Five. Edited first by Mike Gunderloy (1982-1991) and later by R. Seth Friedman (1993-1998), the magazine nurtured a vast creative community through mutual exchange, providing a platform for independent voices and radical self-expression. This work attempts to champion Factsheet Five’s historical importance on the cultural landscape of its time. Examining the covers in this collection, we witness the evolution of zine culture from the early years of stolen office photocopy to laser printing at home. The covers provide a panoramic view of zine culture at the twilight of the Twentieth Century—its art, concerns, creative spirit and clamor for community. Drawn from the collection of the author, Zinelandia is sourced from fifteen countries, their cover art breadcrumbs through the transitional time they traversed.
