New Wave Chicken #10

John Steinbeck wrote, “We should remember our dying and try so to live that our death brings no pleasure to the world.”

After a series of heart attacks, strokes, bleeding ulcers, a full knee replacement, an umbilical hernia, a three-year-long bout with prostatitis, 40 years of sobriety, the death of two fathers and a diagnosis of autism at age 56, New Wave Chicken spent the last few years in reflection, lost in the proverbial weeds. In addition, being unable to reconcile with life on life’s terms while trying to make amends and finding out that saying “sorry” is never enough.

New Wave Chicken #10 is a 23-year-old story of love and loss on Maui. It’s about simultaneously starting a politically-charged punk band and falling in love, followed by the inevitability of losing everything and the overwhelming grief of heartbreak. It’s a purge of emotions while also celebrating various friends on Maui.

This issue includes interviews with Ryan Anderson (a Maui beekeeper), Shelby Sides (an Hawaiian dye maker), Zach Royalty (a Pā’ia-based tattoo shop owner and artist), and Jeremy Jarvis (radio DJ and political activist). Their story is one of hope and love. Also included are stories by Dale Johnson, Hudley Flipside, art by Mark Ottens, Al Garr and Nate Rose, along with various record reviews, tour stories, eulogies and punk rock adventures.
